Eco Niwas Samhita (ENS) is India's Energy Conservation Building Code for Residential Buildings. It was developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power to promote energy efficiency in the residential sector through improved building design.

All new residential buildings with a connected load of 20 kW or more, or a contract demand of 20 kVA or more in States/UTs where the code has been adopted, need to comply with ENS 2024 requirements.

ENS compliance offers multiple benefits including reduced energy consumption, lower electricity bills, improved indoor comfort, reduced carbon footprint, and contribution to national energy conservation goals. Buildings also gain recognition for sustainable practices.

To get certified, you need to engage a BEE-empanelled auditor who will assess your building's compliance with ENS requirements. The auditor will submit the necessary documentation to the State Designated Agency (SDA) for verification and certificate issuance.

ENS 2024 covers all five climate zones of India: Hot-Dry, Warm-Humid, Composite, Temperate, and Cold. The code provides specific requirements tailored to each climate zone to ensure optimal energy performance.

ENS 2024 becomes mandatory in states and union territories only after they have formally notified and adopted the code. Currently, several states have adopted the code, and more are in the process of notification.
