Eco Niwas Samhita (ENS) 2024: Driving Sustainability in Residential Buildings

The Eco Niwas Samhita (ENS) 2024 is India’s flagship Energy Conservation and Sustainability Building Code for the Residential Sector. Developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power, the code is a comprehensive framework aimed at enhancing the thermal performance of residential buildings, reducing energy consumption, lowering CO2 emissions, and fostering a healthy living environment for occupants.

State-Specific Adoption and Implementation

Each Indian state has the flexibility to adopt, comply with, and enforce ENS 2024 based on its unique climatic conditions and topography. This ensures that the code remains adaptable and relevant to the diverse geographic and environmental contexts across India.

In this spirit, the Gujarat-ENS 2024 platform has been tailored specifically for Gujarat, providing a customized framework to facilitate G-ENS 2024 compliance and support sustainable residential development within the state.

Key Features of ENS 2024

ENS 2024 incorporates essential measures across various dimensions:

  • Energy Conservation: Promotes efficient energy use in building operations.
  • Sustainable Site Planning: Encourages eco-friendly site development practices.
  • Water Conservation: Focuses on efficient water usage and management.
  • Waste Management: Advocates for responsible waste handling and disposal.
  • Indoor Environmental Quality: Ensures a safe, healthy, and comfortable indoor environment.

The code applies to residential buildings meeting the following criteria (whichever is more string:

  • Plot area greater than 3,000 m², or
  • Minimum connected load of 100 kilowatts (kW), or
  • Contract demand of 120 kilovolt amperes (kVA), whichever is more stringent.

Evolution of ENS 2024

ENS has evolved over the years:

  1. ENS Part-1: Building Envelope (2018) – Focused on the thermal performance of building envelopes.
  2. ENS Part-2: Code Compliance and Electro-Mechanical & Renewable Energy Systems (2021) – Added provisions for mechanical systems and renewable energy.

The ENS 2024 iteration unifies both parts while introducing sustainability measures for site planning, water, waste, and indoor environments. This advancement signifies a crucial step in promoting sustainability and energy efficiency in India’s residential building sector.
