Welcome to the Gujarat Eco Niwas Samhita (G-ENS) platform, a dedicated platform to support the implementation and compliance of the Eco Niwas Samhita (ENS) 2024 in Gujarat. Designed to drive energy efficiency and sustainability in the residential sector, this platform serves as a one-stop solution for stakeholders navigating the journey toward sustainable building practices in the state.

Gujarat, located on the western coast of India, boasts the country’s longest coastline of 1,600 km and hosts a population of approximately 6.5 crores across 33 districts. With a diverse mix of climatic zones and its commercial hub, Ahmedabad, the state is a frontrunner in adopting modern infrastructure, energy codes, and sustainable practices. Gujarat also ranks second in India for the highest installed electricity generation capacity, making it a leader in energy innovation.

Recognizing the importance of energy conservation, Gujarat has been proactive in adopting the Eco Niwas Samhita (ENS) 2024, the Energy Conservation and Sustainability Building Code for the Residential Sector. Developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power, ENS 2024 aims to:

• Improve the thermal performance of residential buildings.
• Reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
• Enhance the living environment for occupants.

The ENS 2024 builds upon its earlier iterations:

• Part-1: Building Envelope (2018) introduced thermal efficiency measures.
• Part-2: Code Compliance and Electro-Mechanical & Renewable Energy Systems (2021) expanded on compliance frameworks and renewable energy integration.

The latest version, Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code-Residential 2024, also termed as Eco Niwas Samhita 2024 adopts a holistic approach, incorporating energy conservation with site, water, waste, and indoor environmental considerations to create sustainable and energy-efficient residential buildings.

Purpose of the G-ENS 2024

The G-ENS 2024 was designed for adoption into building bye-laws by Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to ensure seamless integration into local construction practices. Its ultimate goal is to promote environmentally conscious residential designs that:

• Reduce operational costs.
• Provide healthier living conditions.
• Minimize environmental impact.

G-ENS 2024 Compliance Levels

The G-ENS 2024 prescribes three progressive levels of compliance to accommodate varying degrees of energy conservation and sustainability:

1. G-ENS 2024 Compliance: The baseline standard.
2. G-ENS 2024 + Compliance: Enhanced energy efficiency measures.
3. Super G-ENS 2024 Compliance: Advanced sustainability and energy efficiency.

Code Applicability

The G-ENS 2024 applies to:

• Private one- or two-family dwelling units.
• Apartment houses.
• Mixed-use buildings.

However, it does not apply to:

• Lodging and rooming houses.
• Dormitories.
• Hotels and resorts.
